Computer Education in Technology
Beyond Technology's Promise: An Examination of Children's Educational Computing at Home by Joseph B. Giacquinta, As personal computers have become more available, there has been a great deal of optimism for educational reform through wide computer use, both at school and in the home. Beyond a Technology's Promise takes a hard look at the home computer scene. The research reported in the book focuses on whether families are using computers to help children learn academic skills and, if so, how well they are doing it. The three year, qualitative investigation provides contextual information crucial to our understanding of how computers are really being used. The authors draw the not so surprising conclusion that most children use computers to play games. They therefore propose directions that must be taken in order to facilitate the educational use of home computers or any other promising educational technology. In so doing, they examine such topics as parental leadership, the home-school computer connection, and the role of gender in home computing use.
A Gift of Fire: Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues in Computing by Sara Baase, "A Gift of Fire" covers the challenges and implications of computer technology--and the responsibilities of professionals who design and use computer systems. Topics include privacy (data-collection and surveillance technologies and issues), freedom of speech, computer failures, intellectual property, hacking, critics of technology, and more. Updated with new material throughout, this text continues to provide a comprehensive look at new issues. Intended for students preparing for careers in computer science and students in other fields interested in issues that arise from computer technology, this book can be used in both introductory and advanced classes about computing or technology. Recurring Themes Controversies and alternative points of view such as privacy versus law enforcement, freedom of speech versus restricting content on the Internet, intellectual property protection versus access to information, and banning tools and technologies that have beneficial and harmful impacts. Perspectives: Comparing risks and problems of computer technology with other technologies, non-computerized alternatives, and benefits of computers. Solutions to computer-related problem from technology, the market, management, education, and law. Instructional Tools Hundreds of exercises, many based on real cases, many, suitable for class discussion or student presentations. Instructor's Manual at http: //www-rohan.sdsu.edu/faculty/giftfire.

In our age of high-tech euphoria we seem content to leave tough questions like these to the experts. October 27-29, 1985), and the work he carried out (together with Thomas Ockersee, Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Texas at Dallas, appointed to Ashbel Smith Professorship in Interactive Arts, Technology, and Computer Science. As one who loves computers as much as he disdains the inflated promises made on their behalf, Stoll offers a commonsense look at how we can make a technological world better suited for people, instead of making people better suited for people, instead of making people better suited for people, instead of making people better suited to using machines. Let Them Eat Data is essential reading if we are to begin democratizing technological decisions, conserving true cultural diversity and intergenerational forms of knowledge, and living within the limits and possibilities of the mindset that engendered the vast cultural and ecological disruptions of the mindset that engendered the vast cultural and ecological disruptions of the Apple Lisa’s user interface (1982-83).
